Windows 7 – Remove desktop.ini from startup/login

If you’re using Windows 7 and would like to know how to remove the notepad file that displays when you have logged in:

[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21769
IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-183

Simply do this:

In the start/run input box type: shell:startup and press enter.

You will probably seen an empty folder, so now you need to go to Organize > Folder and Search options > View

Now untick ‘hide protected operating system files and folders’

You should now see Desktop.ini visible – just delete this file and then re-tick ‘hide protected operating system files and folders’

Job done.
